Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a declaration of commitment to a life of Jewish learning and living as an individual and as an active and contributing member of the Jewish community. The Adult B’nai/B’not Mitzvah program at NVHC is an opportunity for adult members of our congregation, as part of a group of peers, to engage with our millennia-old tradition and community ritual of affirming one’s place in the Jewish community.

Becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah at NVHC involves two kinds of components, as the development of knowledge and skills in different areas is the same expectation we set for our children. This program of study lasts approximately 18 months. And, just like for our children, the Adult B’nai/B’not Mitzvah journey will conclude in a ceremony/service. Taking both the Jewish topics class and the Hebrew class are essential for participation in the class and service.*

The first component, which takes place on select Wednesday evenings throughout the 18 months, consists of a course led by one of the three clergy on various Jewish topics: Jewish history, key Jewish texts, Jewish values and ideas, and Jewish practice/ritual/holidays.

The second component consists of developing Hebrew skills, with the goal of being comfortable enough reading Hebrew to read or chant a bit of Torah and lead a few prayers. This component will take place simultaneously along the journey, twice a month; it will be online and separate from the aforementioned class. Hebrew will be taught by our experienced Hebrew teacher, Neta Litvin.**

We are excited to extend this journey to all who are eager and ready!

*There is a fee for this complex and special learning journey. If this will be a hardship, please contact our Executive Director Joe Miller confidentially; we do not want finances to keep you from learning.
