Congregational Conversation: Stewardship of the Earth’s Climate
Jan 23 @ 12:00 am - 1:30 am

One of the most important issues we face today is humanity’s stewardship of the Earth.  Our tradition teaches us to use the resources of the planet, but also to respect and maintain them.  There are many facets to these responsibilities, but in recent decades the problem of Climate Change has emerged as, perhaps, the most pressing.  An overwhelming number of scientists say we face a crisis, a smaller number are skeptics, some states pass laws to prevent further climate change, while others instead pass laws preempting local communities from addressing the problem. The country is polarized and, at times, paralyzed.

In honor of Tu B’shvat (the Jewish birthday of the Trees), we will be having a Congregational Conversation about our stewardship of the Earth’s climate.  If this issue has affected you personally, or you feel passionately that you have a story to share, please contact Rabbi Holzman (rabbiholzman@nvhcreston.org) as soon as possible to help in the planning for that evening.

Even if the environment is not your most important issue, we hope everyone will join us on January 22, to cultivate our citizenship skills and hear voices in the community.

NVHC with VOICE at the General Assembly
Jan 25 @ 2:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Time subject to change. We will be back in time for Shabbat services.

To be a continuous reminder though out the General Assembly’s session regarding VOICE’s values and demands, VOICE is ensuring that there is a visible presence in Richmond every day of the 45-day General Assembly. Our focus is support of the Governor’s budget that includes additional funding for schools to address mental health issues, and more affordable housing for all Virginians. NVHC is responsible for sending a contingent to Richmond on January 25. We will be going in carpools. If you are interested or for more information, contact Stu Williger for more information.

Tot Shabbat
Feb 2 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Torah Talk (1)

Nothing is more heartwarming than the sight of the youngest members of our community running to the Sanctuary for Shabbat! Tot Shabbat affords our children and their families the time and space to truly experience the joys of Shabbat. Songs, stories, plenty of active participation, an Ark overflowing with plush stuffed Torahs, and a child-friendly d’var Torah (lesson). What could be better?

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming; there is no dress code, and there is no shushing if your little one can’t sit still (they are free to move around!) The service is followed by a delicious child-friendly, nut free oneg!

While Tot Shabbatot (plural for Shabbat) are designed for toddlers and preschoolers, the whole family is invited to attend. Personal snacks must be nut-free and we ask that no food is eaten during the service in the sanctuary.
