Prayer Lab Erev Shabbat Service
Oct 20 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Texts, prayers and practices are the tools of our Jewish life. Like any toolbox, we might sometimes need some guidance or a refresher how to best use a particularly unusual tool.

Praying can be challenging.  Many of us come to services for a variety of reasons, perhaps with the hope or expectation that we will receive a lightning bolt of transformation – which, if we are truthful, is not how it often unfolds.  The changes we note in ourselves may often be more subtle, happening over a longer period of time.  We do know that there is no single, proven way to make prayer come alive for any of us; having an open mind and an open heart is going to get us much of the way along, so then both the comfortable and the experimental have the potential to inspire and excite us.

Our idea of creating a Prayer Lab experience here at NVHC comes from our desire to create a safe space for experimentation, in order to broaden and deepen our prayer experiences.  We have already done this occasionally, inspired by various times of year or communal events.  We know that some experiments have worked better than others; the challenge of learning can also be its own inspiration.  In the coming year, three Shabbat services will be designated as Prayer Labs– October 20th, February 2nd and April 27th. We invite our community to join us in exploring different experiences of music and text, adjustments with our physical space and with what we create in that space, all in service of opening more ways into prayer.

Torah Talk @ Sanctuary
Oct 21 @ 9:00 am – 10:15 am

The Torah is a vast collection of stories, commandments, ritual practices, and ethical standards. It is meant to be studied and understood not only to connect us to our ancestors and traditions, but to guide us toward an ethical and spiritual life. Torah means learning. For many of us, understanding Torah is not easy. We may find the language confusing and the meaning difficult to grasp. Yet when we learn together, we are thrilled by the insights we glean and share. Update your calendar now and join us. Participants are encouraged to voice their thoughts, insights and interpretations. Dress is casual. Previous Torah study or Hebrew fluency is not required. Questions or for more information, contact Susan Trivers, Worship Committee Chair at worship@nvhcreston.org.

Our program is based on the belief that students learn best in a synagogue community environment when they work together and both teach and learn from one another. Tanakh Chevruta
Oct 22 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Tanakh is Torah + Neviim (Prophets) + Ketuvim (Writings). The Hebrew Bible! Chevruta is a study and partnership. This study group is focused on reading and discussing the Hebrew Bible, weaving in our understanding of ancient, medieval, and modern Jewish History, Tanakh, and Derech HaShem. Specific topics covered will be determined by the group as we progress. Last year we covered the Books of Judges and Kings, as well as Daniel, Esther and Job. In the coming year, we will be using The Jewish Study Bible to study and discuss Torah portions from Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Everyone has something to offer and something to learn! No experience required.
