Food Packing
Feb 24 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Did you know that hundreds of kids in Fairfax County go home from school on Friday knowing that their next meal will not be until they return to school Monday morning?  NVHC Change  is helping to fight food insecurity and fill hungry tummies through the Weekend Snack Bag program for Forest Edge Elementary School and Clearview Elementary School. Once a month, NVHC Change volunteers donate food and pack 225 gallon sized bags with healthy snacks to send home with children in need, right here in Reston.

Come help us back the bags! Packing dates for the 2018-2019 school year are: September 23, October 28, November 11, December 16, January 20, February 24, March 24, April 28, and May 19.

Shabbat Sustenance: Great Texts of America
Mar 2 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

In our ongoing project to rebuild the habits and skills of Democracy, we will apply the same Jewish questioning we use to address the Torah instead to some of the most important documents in our country’s history. The conversation will be lively and bagels are provided!

Tot Shabbat
Mar 2 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Torah Talk (1)

Nothing is more heartwarming than the sight of the youngest members of our community running to the Sanctuary for Shabbat! Tot Shabbat affords our children and their families the time and space to truly experience the joys of Shabbat. Songs, stories, plenty of active participation, an Ark overflowing with plush stuffed Torahs, and a child-friendly d’var Torah (lesson). What could be better?

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming; there is no dress code, and there is no shushing if your little one can’t sit still (they are free to move around!) The service is followed by a delicious child-friendly, nut free oneg!

While Tot Shabbatot (plural for Shabbat) are designed for toddlers and preschoolers, the whole family is invited to attend. Personal snacks must be nut-free and we ask that no food is eaten during the service in the sanctuary.

Shared Shabbat Dinners
Mar 8 @ 11:30 pm - 3:00 am

No Jewish ritual better captures the essence of Jewish life, brings people together to build community, deepens conversation, and adds joy to life than Shabbat dinner.

On Friday, March 8, instead of gathering at NVHC for services, we gather with friends (and soon-to-be friends) over delicious potluck meals and share the joys of Shabbat together at home.

What started two years ago as 50 Shabbat Dinners has grown into a beautiful tradition where NVHC families get together across the region to be together and celebrate Shabbat as an NVHC community.

How it works:

  • You sign up as a Host or a Guest.
  • You answer some questions about your dinner preferences: Do you keep kosher? Do you want to have dinner with just adults? Are you allergic to anything?
  • The matchmakers at NVHC will match guests and hosts with similar preferences.
  • Once the matches are made, we’ll let you know who you’re hosting or at whose house you’ll be a guest.

Imagine how exciting it will be to celebrate Shabbat together in our homes! We hope everyone will join us.

Registration for Shared Shabbat Dinners is now closed. We have over 150 people signed up – thank you!
