At NVHC, we have a robust Hebrew program for adults featuring a variety of classes to satisfy a wide range of interests and skill levels.  Our classes are open to anyone interested in learning Hebrew or continuing their Hebrew studies.  Members, non-members, Jews and non-Jews are welcome! Whether you have no previous exposure to Hebrew, want to feel more comfortable with Hebrew during services, become adept at Biblical translation, or learn to speak conversational Hebrew: we have a class for you!  If you need help selecting the right class, please contact the Lifelong Learning Chair. If you can’t find a class that fits your needs, please let us know — we will form new classes if we have a minimum of 5 students.

Class participants can pay through Paypal or mail a check payable to NVHC at least 10 days prior to the first day of class to avoid cancellation of class.

Beginning Hebrew

Instructor: Elizabeth Lacher

Time: Thursdays, 6:00 p.m.-7:15 p.m. 12 weeks, September 27- December 20 (no class November 22)

Fee: Members $110, Non-Members $154, free for Tamid students

Text: Aleph Isn’t Tough: An Introduction to Hebrew for Adults, $18.95

Learn to read Hebrew! No previous experience required. This class introduces the student to Hebrew letters and vowels, and broadens the student’s understanding of the use of Hebrew in Jewish life, ritual, study, and tradition. The student will learn to read Hebrew phonetically, to recognize common Hebrew roots used in prayer, and to write block letters. This course provides a foundation for the rest of our Hebrew classes. No prerequisites.

Biblical Hebrew 2

Instructor: Elizabeth Lacher

Time: Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.-8:45 p.m. 24 weeks, September 6- February 28 (no class November 22 & December 27)

Fee: Members $110, Non-Members $154, free for Tamid students

Text: The First Hebrew Primer, 3rd edition, $33.95

For students who want to be able to read, understand, and translate selections from Torah. We will learn to recognize variety of verb forms and expand knowledge of Biblical vocabulary. Prerequisites: Biblical Hebrew 1 or equivalent. Some familiarity with Hebrew grammar and vocabulary.

Adult B’nai Mitzvah Hebrew

Instructor: Neta Litvin

Time: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. October 10, 24; November 14, 28; December 12; January 9, 23; February 13, 27; March 13, 27; April 10, 24; May 8, 22.

Hebrew class only for those who are participating in the Adult B’nai Mitzvah class experience. This will be dedicated to both learning to decode Hebrew reading, and learning Hebrew prayer.
