Experience Traditions

Experience traditions developed over generations of Jews throughout history by attending a service or by contributing your talents to making them more meaningful for all.

As a member of NVHC, your passion for worship is supporting a dynamic and highly regarded team of clergy: keeping our sifrei Torah in excellent repair for generations to come; ensuring that we have enough space to gather the entire mischpacha and all of our friends for High Holy Day services; providing rabbinic scholarship that educates and leadership that inspires; and creating a Shabbat experience that is relevant, uplifting, and of course, delicious.

Singing for Shabbes – open rehearsal with Kol Shirah
May 29 @ 6:45 pm - 8:00 pm

Do you love to sing, but never before thought about singing with a group, in a choir?  I invite you to come to a most un-intimidating setting, to try out singing in a group in with an approach that is a bit different for us.  Monthly, on a Tuesday evening, from 6:45-8:00 p.m., we will sing together, with whoever comes: anyone who is up for singing together, joined by many of our Kol Shirah regulars, exploring how we can make music together for worship and beyond.  No music-reading ability necessary, just a courageous love for singing.  For further information, please contact Cantor Susan Caro at cantorcaro@nvhcreston.org .

Tot Shabbat
Jun 2 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Nothing is more heartwarming than the sight of the youngest members of our community running to the Sanctuary for Shabbat!  Tot Shabbat affords our children and their families the time and space to Torah Talk (1)truly experience the joys of Shabbat led by clergy.  Songs, stories, plenty of active participation and an Ark overflowing with plush stuffed Torahs for the children to dance with.  What could be better?  Well, maybe the Oneg!

Then we join Cindi Drake, Director of Early Childhood Education, as she guides the children through some really fun activities.

Questions?  Contact Cindi Drake at Cindi@nvhcreston.org or phone (703) 435-8829.

BYO Shabbat Dinner!

Join with NVHC friends to Connect on Shabbat

Do you ever feel too busy to cook some nights, let alone invite friends over? We hear you! Starting this fall, we are encouraging families to join together for an informal dairy Shabbat dinner at NVHC.   Bring your own dinner (takeout, homemade, whatever!) and come to the Social Hall to relax and connect with friends before Friday night services.

All are welcome!  Families with children are encouraged to attend.  We love having children help open the ark and participate in services but if you can’t stay that’s ok!  Join us for lighting the candles or whatever works for you.  The idea is to come together and connect on Shabbat.  Mark your calendar now!

BYO Shabbat Dinner dates:

June 8        (coincides with Atid Shabbat)

*BYOSHD starts at 6:00pm, followed by candle lighting and services at 7pm*

Please bring a dairy or parve meal (no pork, shell fish, meat or chicken).  Challah, paper products and water will be provided.  Any questions, please contact Hilary Wilkenfeld, 703-835-2938, or hmwilkenfeld@gmail.com.

Torah Talk @ Sanctuary
Jun 9 @ 9:00 am - 10:15 am

The Torah is a vast collection of stories, commandments, ritual practices, and ethical standards. It is meant to be studied and understood not only to connect us to our ancestors and traditions, but to guide us toward an ethical and spiritual life. Torah means learning. For many of us, understanding Torah is not easy. We may find the language confusing and the meaning difficult to grasp. Yet when we learn together, we are thrilled by the insights we glean and share. Update your calendar now and join us. Participants are encouraged to voice their thoughts, insights and interpretations. Dress is casual. Previous Torah study or Hebrew fluency is not required. Questions or for more information, contact Susan Trivers, Worship Committee Chair at worship@nvhcreston.org.
