DESCRIPTION:Taught by Andrew Stein\nSundays\, October 20\, 27; November 10\, 17; December 8\, 15; January 12\, 19\, 26; February 2\, 9\, 23; March 2\, 9\, 16\, 23; April 6\, 27; May 4\, 18\n9:15-10:30am\, in person and on Zoom \nSynopsis: Many American Jews\, though not all\, trace their roots to ancestors who came to the United\nStates of America before 1945\, with subsequent waves of Jews from the former Soviet Union and\nIslamic world\, Holocaust survivors\, Israelis and others. This course will take a new look at the experience\nand evolution of the Jews in America over time and topically with a different lens. We’ll compare and\ncontrast the American Jewish experience with that of other English-speaking Diaspora communities like\nthe UK\, Canada\, and Australia\, as well as France\, Argentina\, and Brazil. We will explore a series of\nthemes such as efforts to achieve civic equality and Jewish participation in each country’s politics and\nthe military\, the history of immigration and ghetto life from the 19th century up to the present\, Jewish\ndemography\, and the history of Judaism in its varieties. The course will also address the experiences in\ndiverse communities with Anti-Semitism and the Holocaust\, and different communities’ ties to Zionism\nand Israel. \nClick here to register!

DESCRIPTION:Resilience and Hope: An Evening of Art and Storytelling\nSunday\, October 27th\, Doors open at 5pm\nPozez JCC of Northern Virginia\n8900 Little River Turnpike\, Fairfax\, VA 22031 \nThis evening is designed to encourage conversations about resilience and hope through an artistic lens. The program will explore Israel’s post October 7th reality through varied art forms\, helping to examine the consciousness of October 7th in a different way. Participants will be invited to experience several creative spaces to listen to the personal stories of the artists\, take a closer look at how life in Israel has changed over the year and engage in conversations with artists and other participants. Following the sessions\, appetizers and drinks will be served. \nOctober 7\, 2023 as marked on the Jewish calendar\, is commemorated two days after Sukkot\, on the 27th day of Tishrei\, which is falling on October 27 this year.
