SUMMARY:Examining American Jewish History via Biography
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Andrew Stein\nSundays\, October 4\, 11\, 18\, 25; November 8\, 15; December 6\, 13; January 10\, 17 24\, 31; February 7\, 21\, 28; March 7\, 14; April 4\, 11\, 18\, 25; May 2\, 16\, 23\n10:45-12:00\nIn Person & Online \nOver the last few years\, we have explored American Jewish history topically and chronologically\, and with a systematic comparison of the US experience with that of several other large Jewish Diaspora communities (especially English-speaking ones) across a range of topics. In this course to mark the USA’s 250th birthday\, we will approach American Jewish history from a different angle—via biographical profiles of about 20-25 key figures since the origins of American Jewry in 1654. We will look at the lives and legacies of religious leaders\, statesmen and jurists\, philosophers\, poets\, writers and linguists\, journalists\, scientists\, military leaders\, and philanthropists to tease out some broad themes in the study of Jewish history in the United States.

SUMMARY:Advanced Modern Hebrew
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Neta Litvin\nWednesdays\, 12 weeks\, beginning September 30\n7:00-8:00pm\nOnline Only \nThis course is designed for adult learners who are ready to take their Hebrew to a higher level of fluency\, accuracy\, and independence. Using Brandeis Modern Hebrew ~ Hebrew in Context as our core textbook\, students continue working with the same rich themes and language structures explored previously\, while engaging with the material in greater depth. \nThe Brandeis approach emphasizes using Hebrew across all four skills: speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing\, and places language within meaningful contexts. We also spend more time engaging with longer and more challenging texts\, discussion\, and communication in Hebrew. \nLearning continues beyond the textbook through fun and interactive games\, and additional custom-made materials created specifically to support our students. These resources provide opportunities for continued practice\, review\, and deeper engagement with the language beyond the classroom. \nThis course is ideal for learners who want to continue challenging themselves in Hebrew\, strengthen their ability to communicate naturally\, and explore the language and culture at a deeper level.

SUMMARY:The Midrash Says What?!
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Rabbi Ashley Barrett\nTuesdays\, October 13\, November 10\, December 8\, January 19\n7:00-8:30pm\nIn Person & Online \nAre you bothered by the little things in Torah that just don’t make sense? Ever wondered what happened to that one character we never hear from again? Torah says two different things that contradict each other; what do I do with that?! \nThe ancient Rabbis refused to live with those problems\, instead they got creative and came up with some answers. Those answers we call midrash: the rich tradition of Jewish interpretation that fills in the gaps of the biblical text and invites us to see familiar stories in entirely new ways. \nIn this class\, we’ll explore some of the most fascinating and surprising midrashim (plural for midrash).  Along the way\, we’ll ask a bigger question: What does it mean to be a Jewish reader of Torah? And even create our own midrashim. No prior knowledge necessary\, or skill at the fine art of midrash required.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Modern Hebrew
DESCRIPTION:Taught by Neta Litvin\nMondays\, 12 weeks\, beginning September 28\n7:00-8:00pm\nOnline Only \nThis course is for adult learners who have a solid foundation in Hebrew and are ready to expand their skills and become more comfortable using the language. Using Brandeis Modern Hebrew ~ Hebrew in Context as our core textbook\, students continue to develop all four language skills: speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing. \nThe textbook presents Hebrew through meaningful themes\, real-life situations\, dialogues\, and a variety of reading materials. Grammar and vocabulary are introduced and practiced in context\, making it easier to connect the language to actual communication. Students are also exposed to authentic materials and to aspects of Israeli and Jewish culture\, helping bring the language to life. \nAt the Intermediate level\, we focus on understanding and using the language with increasing independence. Students expand their vocabulary\, strengthen their reading comprehension\, and develop a deeper understanding of Hebrew grammar and sentence structure while practicing how to express themselves in Hebrew. \nLearning continues beyond the textbook through fun and interactive games\, and additional custom-made materials created specifically to support our students. These resources provide extra opportunities to review vocabulary and grammar\, practice reading and listening\, and reinforce what we learn together in class. \nThis course is a great fit for learners who want to move beyond basic Hebrew and become more confident\, capable\, and comfortable using the language.
