SUMMARY:Erev Shabbat Service - The Pulpit and the Pew
DESCRIPTION:One of the goals of Rebuilding Democracy has been the promotion of viewpoint diversity. At the same time\, sermons from the pulpit have long advanced moral causes in our democracy. This format\, the sermon from the pulpit\, can also be polarizing and divisive due to its mono-directional nature. Pulpit and the Pew is an experiment that encourages sermonic leadership while inviting congregational response. Our clergy will teach during services on how Jewish texts and tradition apply to public issues and congregants will be invited after the oneg to return to the sanctuary for a conversation. \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Nothing is more heartwarming than the sight of the youngest members of our community running to the Sanctuary for Shabbat! Tot Shabbat affords our children and their families the time and space to truly experience the joys of Shabbat. Songs\, stories\, plenty of active participation\, an Ark overflowing with plush stuffed Torahs\, and a child-friendly d’var Torah (lesson). What could be better? \nThe atmosphere is warm and welcoming; there is no dress code\, and there is no shushing if your little one can’t sit still (they are free to move around!) The service is followed by a delicious child-friendly\, nut free oneg! \nWhile Tot Shabbatot (plural for Shabbat) are designed for toddlers and preschoolers\, the whole family is invited to attend. Personal snacks must be nut-free and we ask that no food is eaten during the service in the sanctuary. \nQuestions? Simchat Torah marks the end of the annual Torah reading cycle – we will unroll the entire Torah\, read the last verses of Deuteronomy\, and then immediately read the first verses of Genesis. We will also dance and carry the Torah around our Sanctuary\, celebrating our joy in it together. \nAs part of these celebrations\, we also welcome and consecrate the newest and youngest members of our community.
