DESCRIPTION:  \nWomen Giving Back (WGB) provides free clothing to women and children living in local homeless shelters. The WGB Store is open one Saturday a month so that the women in the shelters can “shop\,” free of charge for clothing that they need for their jobs or school. \nHow can you help? Sisterhood and other NVHC Congregants will be volunteering at the WGB store in Sterling on Saturday\, February 15 from 8:30 am to 10:30 a.m. \nWe will sort clothes and assist women in choosing outfits and restocking the clothing racks. DESCRIPTION:As Jews\, we are no strangers to the concept of immigration. Our families were all immigrants from somewhere\, facing difficult choices along the way. In today’s world\, we are hearing about various issues surrounding immigration on a daily basis. Join us on a year-long series to explore a 360° view of immigration\, helping us to gain a more nuanced understanding of the state of immigration in America today. Every month\, we will have a speaker join us to share their point of view on immigration – from attorneys and judges to those in the process of immigration\, from government employees to school counselors – each providing a unique look at immigration today. \nOur speaker this month is Dr Julia Paley. Dr. Paley is Director of Immigration Justice at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington\, DC. She is the co-founder of the Congregation Action Network\, an interfaith effort in the DMV area working to prevent detention and deportation of immigrants. Trained as a cultural anthropologist\, she has done research and writing on social movements and politics in Latin America.  \nPLEASE NOTE: Dr Paley will speak with our adults at 6:15 pm.

Both books bring us back to the founding ideas behind Zionism and Israel\, which we have not examined as a group for some time. This study group requires no prior experience or knowledge. \nFirst on March 8\, 2020\, we will discuss Shlomo Avineri’s Herzl’s Vision. \nSecond\, on April 19\, 2020\, we will examine Michael Brenner’s In Search of Israel: The History of an Idea. \n  \nPlease try to give the books a read prior to attendance\, but know that all are welcome even without having read the books.

SUMMARY:We Were Strangers in the Land of Egypt: How We Face Immigration
DESCRIPTION:As Jews\, we are no strangers to the concept of immigration. Our families were all immigrants from somewhere\, facing difficult choices along the way. In today’s world\, we are hearing about various issues surrounding immigration on a daily basis. Join us on a year-long series to explore a 360° view of immigration\, helping us to gain a more nuanced understanding of the state of immigration in America today. Every month\, we will have a speaker join us to share their point of view on immigration – from attorneys and judges to those in the process of immigration\, from government employees to school counselors – each providing a unique look at immigration today. Following their presentation to our teens\, our speakers will spend an hour with our lifelong learners covering these same issues. \nOur speaker this month is Terry Angelotti\, Executive Director of the Centreville Immigration Forum (CIF). She was a founding member of the CIF Board of Directors and became Executive Director in August\, 2014. She has many years of experience in community development\, issue-based advocacy relating to poverty issues\, administration of grant programs\, and program management in faith-based organizations. \n
