DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Yom Hodu Shabbat dedicated to our NVHC youth community and the exploration of the value of gratitude. This year we have a great deal to be thankful for\, even as we struggle to adjust to our current reality. The idea of gratitude is\, perhaps\, more important that ever before as we recognize the multitudes of people who are helping to keep us healthy\, safe\, fed and educated. \nThis year\, our program will be led and facilitated by expert Jewish educator and artist – Adina Polen. Together\, with her help\, we will explore the idea of giving thanks for the people\, and places\, in our lives. Each participant will engage in an art project that can be used as a Thanksgiving or Shabbat centerpiece. This is a program that is accessible for people of all ages. We will be providing the art materials in a kit that can be picked up the week leading up to Shabbat Yom Hodu. Please email emily@nvhcreston.org for more information. \nWhile we can’t be physically together\, we will still be able to be together online to celebrate all that we have to be grateful for in our lives.

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin has been a collector of these ideas for over 40 years and his Code of Jewish Ethics is an accessible and instructive gateway to this body of Jewish thought. From the Torah to contemporary voices\, Telushkin has organized a huge swath of our tradition into usable categories to help guide tough decisions and complicated situations. While the book can be studied alone\, we will sample sections of Volume 1 of Telushkin’s (2 volume) book and discuss the various perspectives. Purchase of the book is not required but is recommended. \nRegistration is highly encouraged. One of the goals of Rebuilding Democracy has been the promotion of viewpoint diversity. At the same time\, sermons from the pulpit (even the Zoom pulpit!) have long advanced moral causes in our democracy. This format\, the sermon from the pulpit\, can also be polarizing and divisive due to its mono-directional nature. Pulpit and the Pew is an experiment that encourages sermonic leadership while inviting congregational response. DESCRIPTION:Even after 150 years\, the American Civil War still impacts our modern lives\, with issues debated in everything from presidential races to school curriculums. On a much smaller stage\, the role of American Jews in the Civil War period has been similarly at issue. Join us for a discussion led by our very own Andy Lacher on the political positions of Jews during the Civil War period\, their individual contributions to both the Union and the Confederacy\, and how the Civil War impacted perceptions of Jews throughout the nation. Topics include expulsion of Jews from Department of Tennessee (the most severe anti-Semitic policy of the US Government) and the controversy of Jews and the Chaplaincy. \nFrom Andy: \n“I grew up interested in the Civil War and history in general. At one point\, I wanted to be a history teacher; it was actually a biography from a Civil War figure that got me interested in engineering instead. I love living in Northern Virginia where we are surrounded by history\, and I continue to read and learn about history (especially American History). My interest in the roles Jews played in the Civil War began when I taught American Jewish History to 7th graders at Rodef Shalom.”
