SUMMARY:Erev Shabbat Service Honoring Rabbi Wainer Together in Our Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:On June 11 at 7:00 pm\, we invite you to a particularly special Shabbat service. At risk of breaking the Jewish rule against mixing special occasions or mixing joyful and painful moments\, we will be honoring Rabbi Wainer’s service to NVHC at our first Friday night in the sanctuary since March 6\, 2020. \nRabbi Jessie Wainer came to NVHC in the summer of 2016 as our first Rabbi in the role of Director of Congregational Learning. She has been a beloved teacher and pastor\, an inspired leader\, and a treasured colleague. We are so proud of her accomplishment in becoming an Associate Rabbi at Congregation Etz Chayim near her family in Chicago\, and we are so sad to see her depart. So June 11 will be a time to express the combination of sadness and joy at this next phase of her career. \nSimultaneously\, the opportunity to be one community\, in our sanctuary\, together in song and prayer has been a North Star for so many of us through this pandemic. To return is a moment of joy\, and at the same time things will not be the same as they were before the Pandemic. \n\nAttendance at the in-person service will be limited to 125 people\nRegistration is required to attend in person\nA waiver is included and required as part of the registration process.\nChairs will be spaced out throughout the sanctuary and social hall.\nHEPA filters and improved HVAC settings will increase air circulation.\nMasks will be required for those who are in person\nWe will broadcast the service on Zoom and YouTube\nHEPA filters and improved HVAC settings will increase air circulation.\n\nSo June 11 will be a time to celebrate and to remember that this pandemic is still not over. \nThese mixtures of emotion are a natural part of life during transition. Community is a key way we make sense of a rapidly changing world. Please join your NVHC community on June 11 at 7:00 pm as we mark this key moment in time.

SUMMARY:Congregational Conversation: How We Talk about Israel and Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join us IN PERSON IN OUR SANCTUARY for a congregational conversation on “How we Talk about Israel and Palestine.” Registration is required; please see your NVHC email for the registration link. The facts on the ground in the Middle East are intricate and difficult\, and they are further complicated by the discourse here in the United States about those facts. The topic is important to us because the State of Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people\, and the home for many of our family members.  The state depends upon the strategic and financial support of the United States\, so discourse here affects security there.  And the ongoing struggle to resolve questions of occupation\, refugee status\, residency\, permanent borders\, equal rights\, and self-defense force us to consider how Jewish values are expressed when Jews have the responsibility and power of sovereignty. \nThe topic is also complicated for us because it has become entangled with American partisanship so political forces push positions on the Israel/Palestinian conflict into rigid alignment with larger sets of policy views.  In addition\, attitudes and social norms about Israel have shifted dramatically over the history of the state\, so terms and ideas that were completely unheard of for one generation are now commonplace for another.  In addition\, when fighting flares up in Israel/Palestine\, and people make public statements about the conflict\, acts of Anti-Semitism skyrocket on-line\, in our schools and in our streets. \nAnd\, lastly\, the topic is urgent for us\, because\, as you may be aware\, three weeks ago a member of the Fairfax County Public Schools tweeted some harsh criticisms of Israel and then the Jewish Community Relations Council publicly rescinded an award they were due to give her.  The controversy was painful and brought protestors into the street outside an FCPS school board meeting. \nA Congregational Conversation is a format we have developed to deepen our discourse and create opportunities to foster viewpoint diversity.  The evening will include prayer\, study\, silence\, story-telling and the sharing of ideas.  We do this within the covenantal relationship we share as members of NVHC\, because our communal values ensure dignity and respect for all perspectives.  If you have been personally affected by this topic and you have a story you would like to share with the congregation\, please contact ShowClick Here to View Contact Information in advance so that we can make sure you are part of the program. \nPlease see your NVHC email for the link to register.

SUMMARY:Tikkun Leil Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:A year ago\, the murder of George Floyd was a confrontation with a truth about America that we usually keep out of mind and out of sight. In Judaism\, this kind of realization\, especially when it causes a widespread social response\, is a moment of revelation\, just like the moment of receiving the Torah. Because racism is such a complex topic\, we decided to create an annual observance that mirrors the practices on the Jewish holiday of revelation (Shavuot)\, which includes study and conversation deep into the night\, a custom called a tikkun. \nJune 19th is the anniversary of the day when the last enslaved people in the United States finally received word of liberation\, a holiday known as Juneteenth. We decided that a Jewish tikkun would start the evening before and culminate with a ritual of liberation in the morning. This year\, June 18th is a Friday night\, so our observance will begin with Shabbat services\, and continue until midnight (see schedule outline below). Learners are welcome to come and go as they please\, as a tikkun is a very informal learning format designed to create an atmosphere of comfort and open-mindedness. To facilitate this\, the entire evening will be conducted by Zoom. In the morning\, at 9:00am we will have a special Great Texts of America study on President Lyndon B. Johnson’s speech to Congress on Voting Rights as a culmination of our Juneteenth observance. \nClick here to register. \nThursday June 18 \n7:00 Shabbat Services\n8:00 Opening Comments from Rabbi Holzman\n8:15 Keynote address and discussion by Rev. Michelle Nickens\n9:00 Study of 1963 Louisiana Literacy Test (which had to be completed in 10 minutes to pass) and conversation\n9:30  Recording of Fannie Lou Hamer testimony\n9:50  Conversation with Dr. Charlene Sinclair on Voting Rights Mobilization:  The Historical Precedent and the Present Threat\n10:30 Video Discussion of Whose Vote Counts?  Netflix documentary.\n11:15  Where do we go from here?  An exploration of opportunities to engage\, including an inspirational closing ritual\n12:00 Conclude\nBreaks will be provided throughout the evening.

SUMMARY:Hebrew: Its History\, Place\, and Use of the Language in Jewish Tradition
DESCRIPTION:In the Jewish tradition\, Hebrew\, known simply as Lashon-Kodesh (“the Holy Tongue”) was often reserved for sacred study of the Torah and religious texts\, synagogue prayers\, and reading from the Sefer Torah on Shabbat and holidays. Often\, Jews throughout the Diaspora created new Jewish languages (such as Ladino\, Yiddish\, Judeo-Arabic\, and Judeo-Persian). However\, from the Haskalah in the late 18th century\, the Hebrew language renaissance from the 19th century on\, and then Zionism and the establishment of Israel\, Hebrew has once again become the lingua franca of many Jews in their daily life. This course will\, over four sessions\, trace this evolution of Hebrew\, that Jews throughout the ages considered as an inseparable\, essential part of what it has meant to be Jewish and live Jewishly. \nThis class will be taught by Andrew Stein and will take place Thursdays\, August 5\, 12\, 19\, and 26 from 6-7:00pm on Zoom. Please see your congregational email for the link.

SUMMARY:How to Make A Rosh Hashanah Seder
DESCRIPTION:How to make a Rosh Hashanah Seder?! You may be surprised to know that this custom and ritual dates back to Talmudic times. It is a special ceremony at home during which we read texts and recite blessings over a variety of foods that symbolize our wishes for the year ahead. This year at NVHC\, we are offering this opportunity specifically for our families to do at home Erev Rosh Hashanah\, and generally for anyone who wishes to add this to their observance. Come to this online workshop with Cantor Caro to learn about the history\, go through the texts and see how to create a meaningful ritual for you and your family at home. You can find the link in the weekly NVHC email. (And\, if you can’t make the workshop\, the video will be available online afterward).
