SUMMARY:Hebrew: Its History\, Place\, and Use of the Language in Jewish Tradition
DESCRIPTION:In the Jewish tradition\, Hebrew\, known simply as Lashon-Kodesh (“the Holy Tongue”) was often reserved for sacred study of the Torah and religious texts\, synagogue prayers\, and reading from the Sefer Torah on Shabbat and holidays. Often\, Jews throughout the Diaspora created new Jewish languages (such as Ladino\, Yiddish\, Judeo-Arabic\, and Judeo-Persian). However\, from the Haskalah in the late 18th century\, the Hebrew language renaissance from the 19th century on\, and then Zionism and the establishment of Israel\, Hebrew has once again become the lingua franca of many Jews in their daily life. This course will\, over four sessions\, trace this evolution of Hebrew\, that Jews throughout the ages considered as an inseparable\, essential part of what it has meant to be Jewish and live Jewishly. \nThis class will be taught by Andrew Stein and will take place Thursdays\, August 5\, 12\, 19\, and 26 from 6-7:00pm on Zoom. This 3D kit is simple to put together by oneself or with family\, to hold a small jar of honey. It is an easy and lovely way to create something new and meaningful for Rosh Hashanah this year! This course is perfect for interfaith couples\, those raising Jewish children\, spiritual seekers\, individuals considering conversion\, and Jews who want a meaningful adult Jewish learning experience. This 18 week course will give you a solid foundation in Jewish holidays\, theology and core beliefs\, life cycle celebrations\, the Hebrew Bible and other sacred texts\, history\, antisemitism\, Zionism and Israel\, even Jewish food. \nThe class will be held on Zoom (plus one in-person Shabbat dinner and service here at NVHC\, and possibly 1-2 other in-person meetings). It will meet on Thursday evenings\, 7-9pm and runs from September 23\, 2021-February 3\, 2022. Instead of labeling these desires as sins\, or forbid them altogether\, the Talmudic rabbis created a system to limit our impulses\, through which we can live a more productive (and guilt-free) life. \nClass 1: The idea of Mitzvot as boundaries\, and rabbinic authority. \nClass 2: Work \nClass 3: Money \nClass 4: Sex \nClass 5: Food \nClick here to register! \nRabbi Lia Bass was born in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil\, is the first woman from Latin America to be ordained as a Rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. She is a bold and innovative Jewish leader who believes that Judaism is a spiritual way to respond to the joys and sorrows of being human. She holds degrees in Guidance Counseling\, Education\, and Teacher of Hebrew as a Second Language. Rabbi Bass has served Jewish communities of congregations in Northern Virginia\, White Plains\, NY\, and Hoboken\, NJ. She has also served as a Fellow at the Center for Learning and Leadership (NY) and as a Rabbi-in-Residence and teacher of Talmud in Bergen County\, New Jersey.
