DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you remember seeing our Megillat Chesed scroll displayed during our last High Holy Days – or maybe you were one of its writers!  Please join us for our Yom Chesed morning\, which will include a Yizkor ritual. It will be our Shabbat sustenance this week – including sustenance for body (food!)\, spirit and mind\, including an opportunity to add your own written reflections for our Megillat Chesed scroll. \nChesed – lovingkindness – is a pillar of Jewish community. The spiritual journey toward freedom that begins with Pesach requires acts of chesed to make it through to Sinai and revelation.  To help us do this\, NVHC has crafted Yom Chesed\, a joyful\, prayerful\, reflective ritual to express gratitude for the opportunities we each have when doing mitzvot of caring for one other. Part of the ritual is adding to our Megillat Chesed scroll that we created by writing reflections of our own experiences of doing chesed for others.  This scroll is then unrolled and displayed during the subsequent High Holy Days. \nOur clergy will be making Matzah Brei! \nClick here to register so we know how much food we need!

The textbook reflects some of the main principles that have shaped the Brandeis Hebrew curriculum during the past decade. These include: an emphasis on the learner’s ability to use the target language in all four skills areas: speaking\, listening\, reading\, and writing; an effort to contextualize each unit within a specific subject or theme; exposing the student to authentic and semi-authentic materials (texts written by native speakers); and exploring different elements from Israeli and Jewish culture in the language drills\, reading passages\, and in selections of sources from the Hebrew literary canon. This course will take a new look at the experience\nand evolution of the Jews in America over time and topically with a different lens. We’ll compare and\ncontrast the American Jewish experience with that of other English-speaking Diaspora communities like\nthe UK\, Canada\, and Australia\, as well as France\, Argentina\, and Brazil. We will explore a series of\nthemes such as efforts to achieve civic equality and Jewish participation in each country’s politics and\nthe military\, the history of immigration and ghetto life from the 19th century up to the present\, Jewish\ndemography\, and the history of Judaism in its varieties. DESCRIPTION:We are excited for a new Adult B’nai Mitzvah class! This is an opportunity for adult members of our congregation\, with a group of peers\, to engage with our millennia-old tradition and community ritual of affirming one’s place in the Jewish community. \nThere will be a Hebrew learning component as well as a content study with Cantor Caro\, Rabbi Holzman\, and Rabbi Barrett. The culmination of this journey is set for Shabbat morning\, May 23\, 2026. \nThe Adult B’nai Mitzvah Hebrew class will be divided into two sections from April through August\, to address varying levels of Hebrew. Starting in September\, we will all come together into one Hebrew class. The calendar includes the dates and times for both sections of the Adult B’nai Mitzvah Hebrew classes. \nAll classes will be in person.

Lessons that train students to read confidently both with and without vowels.
