DESCRIPTION:We are excited for a new Adult B’nai Mitzvah class! This is an opportunity for adult members of our congregation\, with a group of peers\, to engage with our millennia-old tradition and community ritual of affirming one’s place in the Jewish community. \nThere will be a Hebrew learning component as well as a content study with Cantor Caro\, Rabbi Holzman\, and Rabbi Barrett. The culmination of this journey is set for Shabbat morning\, May 23\, 2026. \nThe Adult B’nai Mitzvah Hebrew class will be divided into two sections from April through August\, to address varying levels of Hebrew. Starting in September\, we will all come together into one Hebrew class. The calendar includes the dates and times for both sections of the Adult B’nai Mitzvah Hebrew classes. \nAll classes will be in person. \n

DESCRIPTION:Nothing is more heartwarming than the sight of the youngest members of our community running to the sanctuary for Shabbat! Typically held on the first Saturday of the month\, Tot Shabbat affords our children and their families the time and space to truly experience the joys of Shabbat. Nell Hirsch\, our children’s music specialist\, leads Tot Shabbat with the assistance of Rabbi Holzman\, Cantor Caro\, or Rabbi Barrett. \nSongs\, stories\, plenty of active participation\, an Ark overflowing with plush stuffed Torahs\, and a child-friendly d’var Torah (lesson). What could be better? Well\, maybe the oneg! \nEach service is followed by a delicious nut-free oneg (personal snacks are allowed but they must be nut free) and a fun activity! Paint your own mezuzah; build an edible sukkah of pretzels\, fruit\, and marshmallows; or decorate your own tzedakah box – the fun is endless! \nWhile Tot Shabbatot (plural for Shabbat) are designed for toddlers and preschoolers\, the whole family is invited to attend. DESCRIPTION:The Racial Justice Team of NVHC is pleased to announce that we will welcome Dr. Vernon Walton\, Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Vienna to our Erev Shabbat service on June 13! \nRabbi Holzman and Pastor Walton have planned a pulpit exchange as part of our Juneteenth observance. Pastor Walton’s sermon will address “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” and congregants from the First Baptist Church of Vienna are invited to join us! This will be followed by our traditional oneg Shabbat sponsored by the Racial Justice Team. We ask that everyone register so we can make sure that we have enough food. \nThe second part of the pulpit exchange is planned for Sunday\, July 20 at the First Baptist Church of Virginia where Rabbi Holzman will present his sermon “Where Do We Go From Here? Chaos or Community?” to be followed by a potluck lunch with our members as well as those from the Baptist Church. Details are forthcoming. \nWe are looking forward to both services! We are thrilled that Dr. Mendelsohn will also be joining us on our congregational trip to Morocco in the fall\, in addition to our local guide\, to bring added depth to our learning as we travel the country together. \nDr. Mendelsohn’s areas of expertise include Islamic Studies\, History and Culture of Arabs with Israeli Citizenship\, Bedouin Law and the relationship between language and culture in Arabic and Hebrew. Mendelsohn also lectures on the history and relationship between Middle East countries and militant organizations. Dr. Mendelsohn holds advanced degrees in diverse fields: a Ph.D. in Classics/Linguistics and an M.A. in Archaeology/Linguistics from Concordia University in Montreal. Dr. Mendelsohn is the recipient of one of Canada’s highest academic honors: the Trudeau Prize. From 2005-2012 he was the Israel Academic Director of Givat Haviva\, the national education center of the Kibbutz Federation. He has working fluency in 5 languages and working knowledge of two others plus Middle Egyptian (Hieroglyphics). He lives in Jerusalem with his wife Ronny and their 3 children. \nSession 1: Berbers and the Indigenous Jews of Morocco \nSunday June 22\, 2025 – 10:00am on Zoom \nIt is believed that the first Jews reached Morocco in the 5th century BCE. They settled among the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) tribes and slowly become integrated with them. Intermarriage led to a “Judaization of the Berbers” and conversely a “Berberization of the Jews\,” meaning that the Berber Jews may be considered as indigenous to Morocco themselves. \nThis lecture will look at the history and culture of the Amazigh – especially as it pertains to the cultural imprints left upon the Jews many of which survive until today. \nClick here to register! \nThis lecture series is for members only.
