SUMMARY:Erev Shabbat Service - The Pulpit and the Pew
DESCRIPTION:Join us every Friday to celebrate Shabbat – to sit back\, take a breath\, and truly pause to enjoy the peace that is this weekly gift. \nOur service this Friday is part of our Pulpit and the Pew experiment. One of the goals of Rebuilding Democracy has been the promotion of viewpoint diversity. At the same time\, sermons from the pulpit (even the Zoom pulpit!) have long advanced moral causes in our democracy. This format\, the sermon from the pulpit\, can also be polarizing and divisive due to its mono-directional nature. Pulpit and the Pew is an experiment that encourages sermonic leadership while inviting congregational response. Our clergy will teach during services on how Jewish texts and tradition apply to public issues and congregants will be invited after the service to stay online for a conversation. \nTo learn more about Shabbat at NVHC\, click here. \nCan’t make it to services? Live stream them! We are pleased to offer live streaming of all of our Erev Shabbat services\, unless otherwise stated. Click here to view the stream (note: the stream will appear a few minutes prior to the service start time)

SUMMARY:Exploring Jewish History via Biography
DESCRIPTION:with Andrew Stein\nSundays\, October 18\, 25; November 8\, 15; December 6\, 13; January 10\, 17\, 24\, 31; February 7\, 21\, 28; March 7\, 14\, 21; April 11\, 18\, 25; May 2\, 16\, 23\n \nIn the Eleh Ezkerah on Yom Kippur\, the prayer for martyrs\, the machzor says\, “we remember them as human beings defined by their moral choices\, their sacrifices\, their sense of responsibility.” And elsewhere in the liturgy\, we have gratefully remembered “the Psalmists and Sages of Israel.” In this course\, we will approach Jewish history from a different angle—via biographical profiles of about 20 key figures in the times of the Bible\, antiquity\, the middle ages\, and then over the past roughly 250 years. We will look at the lives and legacies of religious leaders\, statesmen and jurists\, philosophers\, poets\, writers and linguists\, journalists\, scientists\, military leaders\, and philanthropists to tease out some broad themes in the study of Jewish history in the Land of Israel and the Diaspora\, especially in Europe and the United States. \nClick here to read a more in-depth description and click here to view the syllabus. \nRegistration is highly encouraged.

SUMMARY:Jewish Ethics
DESCRIPTION:with Rabbi Michael Holzman\nTuesdays\, October 20; November 10\, 24; December 8; January 12\, 26; February 9\, 23; March 9\, 23; April 13\, 27; May 25\n7:30-9:00pm \nJewish text\, tradition\, and culture have a lot to say about how we conduct our lives\, from our personal relationships to our business practices\, to our obligations to the world at large. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin has been a collector of these ideas for over 40 years and his Code of Jewish Ethics is an accessible and instructive gateway to this body of Jewish thought. From the Torah to contemporary voices\, Telushkin has organized a huge swath of our tradition into usable categories to help guide tough decisions and complicated situations. While the book can be studied alone\, we will sample sections of Volume 1 of Telushkin’s (2 volume) book and discuss the various perspectives. Purchase of the book is not required but is recommended. \nRegistration is highly encouraged. SUMMARY:The Jewish Political Tradition
DESCRIPTION:with Rabbi Michael Holzman\nFridays\, October 23\, November 20\, December 18\, January 15\, March 19\, April 23\, May 21\n8:15-9:30am \nEvery group\, especially whole communities\, need to have a way to organize and govern themselves. Throughout our history\, both when Jews controlled territory in the land of Israel\, and during the many centuries of diaspora community\, Jews have developed ideas and philosophies about this topic and tested them in different circumstances. Given the ongoing debate about the health of American democracy\, and our Rebuilding Democracy Project\, now is a good time to look at what concepts Jewish thought has to offer about politics. \nRegistration is highly encouraged. SUMMARY:From Fear to Fortitude:  A Pre-Election Sacred Space
DESCRIPTION:As Election Day approaches\, we are well aware of our civic duty to vote and encourage other people to vote (you can sign up for our 100% voter participation pledge here)\, but our responsibility as citizens extends beyond voting\, which is why we are inviting you to attend an NVHC experiment\, From Fear to Fortitude:  A Pre-election Sacred Space\, October 27\, 7:30-9:00\, register here to receive materials and zoom info. \nWe created this event because healthy citizenship includes the way we relate to each other\, to those with whom we disagree\, and to the entire American project.  We cannot reduce citizenship only to voting and then walk away expecting democracy to take care of itself.  The democratic system depends upon people engaging with each other to address the issues\, maintaining norms that demand respect\, and building local organizations that are the seedbed of citizenship.  NVHC is a place where we can exercise these citizenship muscles and nourish America’s infected politics back to health.  Our democracy depends just as much on how we relate within NVHC as it depends upon the outcome of the election\, some might say more. \nSo we will gather one week before election day with two goals in mind:  to honor the depths of anxiety currently circulating in our community\, and to elevate our vision to the long horizon of the American project.    Our gathering will include prayer\, song\, learning\, reflection\, storytelling\, and a chance for you to voice your feelings and thoughts about the coming weeks.  Rabbi Rachel Schmelkin\, NVHC’s former rabbinic intern who currently works for the One America Movement will participate as a scholar/artist-in-residence. \nAs is our custom\, we ask that you participate in the creation of this sacred space by volunteering in advance to offer a short testimonial or story about either (a) a particularly illustrative example of the fears you have experienced or witnessed\, or (b) an answer to the question\, “What would you like America to look like in 40 years?”   The registration form has a space for you to indicate your willingness to speak. \nThis program is part of our Rebuilding Democracy Project and focuses internally on the way that our community can cultivate and incubate healthy citizenship.  Therefore\, this program focuses on members of the NVHC community only. \nIf you have any questions or comments\, please do contact ShowClick Here to View Contact Information.
