This five-part series surveys the transition of Israeli society from the Sabra culture of the pre-state Yishuv to the present multi-cultural Israeli society.

1/6 – Sabra culture and Israeli society of 1948

2/3 – Mizrachim (adot hamizrach), Jews from Arab Lands

3/3 – Orthodoxy – the Charidim (ultra-Orthodox) versus the religious Zionists (Modern Orthodox) focusing on messianism and redemption after 1967

4/7 – Palestinian citizens of Israel from 1949 through 2021

5/19 – Russians, Ethiopians, and the Americanization of Israel

Fred Lazin was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Cum Laude at UMASS Amherst where he served as president of Hillel. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty at Ben Gurion University (BGU) in Israel in 1975. At BGU, he established an Interdisciplinary Urban Studies Program and the Department of General Studies and chaired the Departments of Behavioral Science and Politics and Government. He served as the Director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Center of Social Ecology and the Overseas Student Program (OSP). In 1991 Fred became the Lynn and Lloyd Hurst Family Professor of Government.
