Women of NVHC – Supporting one Another, our Temple and our Extended Community

Celebrating, Learning, and Giving with Acts of Loving Kindness

A Note from your Co-Presidents, Peggy Nelson and Marsha Sheinman

We are excited to be kicking off another year of creating connections and making memories, while offering support to our Temple and our members. The dictionary defines “support” as a “thing that bears the weight of something and keeps it upright.” We think that is what Women of NVHC can offer to you. We want Women of NVHC to be a place where friends become family. We are a community, a place to feel like you belong. A place to gather and share food, laugh, and talk, and a place to catch you when you need to cry. We can be all these things, and we want you to join us. With all of us, we will make NVHC a thriving, giving, warm and friendly place.

Our membership drive kicks off in August, but we welcome new members throughout the year. Whether you are new to the community or a long-time resident, we’d love for you to join us. We are an inclusive community for all NVHC women – married, partnered, single, divorced, or widowed – with or without children – Jewish and non-Jewish – we want to welcome you all to our thriving group! We hope you’ll take advantage of all we have to offer, and become an integral part of our vibrant and supportive community. And, if you are a new NVHC member, we welcome you with one year of free membership to our Women of NVHC group!

We invite all of you to join us to further our mission of promoting camaraderie, esprit de corps, spirituality, and participation in tikkun olam. We support one another, our Temple, and our extended community through a variety of activities, and with acts of loving kindness. We are always looking for innovative ways to offer opportunities and events that will encourage celebrating, learning, and giving to all Women of NVHC. Please do not hesitate to contact us with an idea, an interest, or a new way to make connections; we welcome your thoughts and help in developing new opportunities. Now is the time to join us and become a part of our community.

Join the Women of NVHC; make deep and lasting connections, and feel the warmth and support of belonging to this great group of Women. We are here to support you! We look forward to welcoming you to our activities soon!

Upcoming Events

September 8th 2:00 Screening of Screams before Silence film followed by discussion

October 27th  1:30-3:30 Chocolate and Champagne Event

Fourteen of us gathered on the afternoon of July 28th at River-Sea Chocolates in Chantilly to enjoy each others’ company, learn about cocoa and chocolate production and to taste!!!!

Mariano, a co-founder, and Natasha, our “guide” talked to us about sourcing, and transporting cocoa from South America. Just like wine and coffee, the geographical area in which the cocoa trees grow affect the flavor of the finished chocolate. We learned how they only use beans that are ethically and sustainably sourced and transported via sail boat (not by geo-polluting and warming container ships). They visit their suppliers to make sure labor conditions are fair to the workers and the farms are run properly for long term production.

As we tasted each chocolate, which Natasha told us, is done only near the front teeth to maximize flavor, we realized how each had very distinct flavor profiles. Chewing it at the back of the mouth not only moves it away from the tastebuds, but also introduces more moisture which dilutes the flavors.

Next, we saw how the chocolate making process happens, from the bean, to nib, to paste, to mixing, molding and storing. Nothing is wasted, the hull from the bean is crushed and used in coffee roasting (Weird Brothers Coffee)*, granola (Dano’s Granola)* and is composted.

Finally, we “hit” the chocolate store and bought many delicious items to bring to our families and friends.

*Weird Brothers Coffee and Dano’s Granola, like River-Sea, are local small business creating small batch artisanal items.
