Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton

“Resilience, Perseverance and Race”

Dr. Charmaine McKissick-Melton (Dr. Mac) is a member of the Board of Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies.  As the youngest of the late Floyd McKissick Sr.’s four children, Dr. Mac grew up in the Civil Rights Movement.  She watched as her older sisters integrated the North Carolina school system and the abusive actions they encountered daily. She has shared home and meals with Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, Ralph Abernathy, and James Farmer.  McKissick-Melton is associate professor in the Department of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University, and a 2017–18 NCCU-Duke Digital Humanities Fellow.
